How Do I Do A Reverse Telephone Search

You've got this phone number and you want to do a reverse telephone search to find out the name of the person who owns it. Maybe it is from a prank caller who is driving you crazy. Maybe someone at this number is leaving mysterious messages for your spouse. Whatever the reason, you need to find out who this number belongs to. You need to know how to do a phone number reverse search.

This won't take long, and if you're lucky, won't cost you a dime. The first thing to do is to open your favorite search engine (Google for example) and do a search for the phrase "free reverse phone number search." Your search will return loads of sites that offer free searches. Click on one of those links and follow the directions to do a search. If the number you are researching is a regular old-style telephone like we've had in our houses forever, any of these free search sites should give you the information you need.

Note: Occasionally you'll come across a free reverse telephone search site that requires you to enter your own information before they will give you information about the number you are researching. You don't want to do that. Simply find another site and try your search again.

Unfortunately, this kind of search frequently will not turn up the information you need. Why is that? Because free search sites only have access to some of the phone numbers out there. They don't include unlisted numbers (if they did, what would be the point of having an unlisted number?) and they don't list cell phone numbers. So if the number you're interested in is one of these, the free phone number reverse search sites won't be able to help you.

If this happens to you, don't give up. There is a different kind of reverse telephone search service. These services use the same information sources as the free services, plus a whole lot more. They buy access to all sorts of public records databases. They then extract phone number information from these databases and combine it all together to create a much more complete record of information related to each other. The phone number you're interested in might be unlisted, but if it appears on some document that's in the public record, these services will find it and match a name to that phone number for you.

Of course, all this work costs a lot of money. That means you're going to have to pay for the information you need. The prices that these services charge can vary, but surprisingly, the best services don't charge a lot. Even better, the very best will let you do a preliminary search for free.

In a preliminary search, you enter the number and the site tells you what kind of information they have for that number. In other words, a preliminary report might tell you that they have the name and address of the person that the phone number belongs to, but it won't tell you what the person's name or address are. To get those details, you have to pay.

Some preliminary searches even tell give you a map showing the approximate address of the owner of the number. In some cases, this information alone is enough to tell you what you need to know. Say for example, that you've started getting prank calls since moving in with your new significant other. If a preliminary search shows that the prank calls are coming from an unlisted number in the town your jealous ex just moved to, it is a pretty safe bet you can figure out who is making those calls without even doing the full search. But I digress.

So we now have a plan for doing your phone number reverse search. Start with the free telephone reverse search services. If they don't give you the information you need, use one of the phone number reverse search sites that charges a fee, but can provide information about the kinds of phone numbers that free services can't deliver. Keep your fingers crossed that a free preliminary search at one of these services will give you the information you want, but expect to pay a fee to get what you need.

Now all you have to do is choose the paid service to use. Unless you've got money to burn on multiple searches, you'll want to use a service that's been around for a while and has a solid reputation.
