How To Track Cell Phone Numbers 2 Ways

We've all been in this situation: for whatever reason, you need to find out information about an unknown phone number, but when you try, you discover that it is a cell phone number and you can't just look up the information. That's because cell phone numbers are not public domain information that's readily available to anyone. So that leaves you with the question of how to track cell phone numbers. There are actually two ways and we'll talk about both here so you can choose the one that's best for you. The hard way is to track cell phone numbers yourself. The better way is to use a cell phone number lookup service.

How to Track Cell Phone Numbers Yourself

You can accomplish a little bit by simply analyzing the phone number itself. All phone numbers (cell phone or otherwise) in the US are broken into three sections. The first section (3 digits long) is the Area Code. The next section (also 3 digits long) is the Central Office Code. The last section (4 digits long) is the Line Number.

You probably know that you can go on the Internet and look up area codes (enter the phrase area code lookup in Google). This will narrow down your search to a particular geographic area. It's still going to be a huge area, but you're moving in the right direction.

What most people don't know (and I didn't know until I researched this article) is that you can go one step further. You can also look up central office codes online. Once you know which state the area code applies to, you can go to a site like NANPA.com, the North American Numbering Plan Administration, and look up the central office codes for a given state.

Unfortunately, this is where the trail ends without further knowledge. You can't look up the line number like you can the other parts of the number. Of course you can always deduce things that might be useful. For example, if you're getting a lot of hangup calls in the middle of the night, and you track the area code and central office code to the vicinity of your spouse's angry ex, you can have a pretty good idea of who is doing the calling.

So this approach can help, but isn't going to give you solid proof of who that mystery number belongs to.

How to Track Cell Phone Numbers with a Cell Phone Number Lookup Service

As we saw in the last section, you can make some progress tracking cell phone numbers by hand, but it is a slow, tedious process that doesn't get you all the information you really want anyway. The smart way to do this is to use a cell phone number lookup service. Using such a service, tracking cell phone numbers takes just seconds. You simply enter the number on the site and click the big button.

In seconds, the site returns a basic report which tells you if the search found the number and provides some basic information so you can decide whether it is worthwhile to pay for a full report. The site I recommend, Reverse Phone Detective, even includes a map of the area that the phone number is from, to help you decide whether the full search is worthwhile to you.

A full report (which cost $14.95 at Reverse Phone Detective as of this writing) will give you tons of information, including the name and address of the person or company the phone number belongs to. This is clearly the way to go if you need to track cell phone numbers.
