Reverse Phone Detective Review
from PhoneDetective ComProduct description
Reverse Phone Detective is a deceptively simple-looking product. But there's a lot of horsepower hidden behind the scenes, all dedicated to answering what can be an incredibly frustrating question, "Whose phone number is that?."
Finding a land line phone number (the old-fashioned kind where the phone is plugged into the wall) is simple. There are free directories for that kind of thing. So tracing this kind of number is easy. Unless of course the phone number is unlisted, in which case a standard phone directory is useless.
To track cell phone numbers is a lot harder. That's because these numbers aren't in the public domain and no really good free cell phone directories exist. This is where sites like Reverse Phone Detective come into the picture.
Just because some land line numbers are unlisted, and there's no good free directory of cell phone numbers, doesn't mean that the information isn't out there somewhere. It just means that gathering it is going to take a lot of work and cost a lot of money. There are many sources of information available that, when combined, make it possible to create a pretty comprehensive database of land line, cell phone, and even unlisted numbers.
The folks at PhoneDetective.com have hooked their website into such a database, making it easy for you and me to get access to all that information. And doing so couldn't be any easier. All you need to do is enter the phone number you're interested in, and click the big button that says Search Now.
Within seconds, the site returns with some basic information for you. In most cases it will show you something like this:

The system tells you that it found the number you were searching for, where the owner of that number is located, and whether or not a full report is available. This kind of search is free.
There's also a Continue button at the bottom of the screen. Click this if you want to get the full report. Getting this full report is as easy as everything else at the site, but this report will cost you.You can get a single report for $14.95 (as of Feb 4,2010), or you can get a 1-year membership that entitles you to the report plus other benefits that are listed on the site.
While all this is pretty cool, the features and pricing here are basically the same as at other similar sites. So the question really comes down to, does the site work well, and is it worth the money. So I did some research.
Product Research
To find out if this site works, I ran a bunch of tests. Now with the millions of phone numbers in the United States (like other similar services, this one works only with US phone numbers) I couldn't do anything like a comprehensive test. Instead, I decided to look up various phone numbers that I knew the facts about. This included primarily land lines and cell phones of friends and family. In each case, the free searches showed me that the site knew the phone number, and the information it delivered for free was all accurate. Likewise, I bought the full report for one of the numbers and confirmed that all the information it provided was valid. As far as I can tell, this site delivers good results.
Are you guaranteed to get results? No. Firstly, some phone numbers are just not available, even through the resources used in creating this massive phone number database. Secondly, people in the US have the right to opt out of databases like this. Reverse Phone Detective offers a kit that shows you exactly how to get your name removed from their database. So if the person you are researching has done this, the system won't show you the information even though it is available.
